Laura Hayward

Fulbright, 2014, Australia

Laura Hayward, from Richmond, Va., received her bachelor’s degree in chemical and life science engineering from VCU in May of 2014.  With support from her Fulbright grant, Hayward researched diagnostic devices for cancer, which will contribute to the field of personalized medicine, in Australia at the University of Queensland, Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Her research goal is to produce a flexible probe for future cancer diagnoses. In the future, Hayward plans to earn an M.D./Ph.D., and plans to continue researching diagnostic and therapeutic approaches based on the individual. Hayward hopes to contribute to the field of personalized medicine in her graduate studies, as well as in the rest of her career.

“We’re proud to have student scholars like Laura at VCU,” said Beverly Warren, Ph.D., Ed.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at VCU.  “Their Fulbright accomplishments are an example of the importance of the pursuit of knowledge we try to instill in our students.”
