When Kunal Kampoor returned to the States after studying abroad in England, he looked for any reason to go back. Kapoor’s wishes were fulfilled when he was chosen for a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United Kingdon.
When Kapoor applied to Fulbright, he was a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University, preparing to graduate. In May 2012, Kapoor received his bachelor’s degree in religious studies while taking pre-medicine classes as well. In fact, he was on a medical mission trip in Ecuador when he heard the good news about his Fulbright award.
When describing the moment, Kapoor was at a loss for words. “It didn’t hit me,” he said. “I was speechless. I didn’t know what to do or what to say or what to think.”
Kapoor chose Durham, a historical city just south of Newcastle in England’s North East, as his destination because of his previous experience in the country. The academic atmosphere of the country makes him very excited to return there. “The life of the mind trumps over everything else [in England],” Kapoor said.
The application process, which he described as “daunting but worthwhile,” was beneficial to Kapoor. To him, the process allowed him to look at how he could influence society in the long term. “You start to look at how to head a conscious and deliberate life,” Kapoor said.
Kapoor will be studying the relationship between religion and psychology during his stay in Englad.
