Charlene Gaw, an undergraduate major in chemistry and psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, was awarded the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study advanced Chinese abroad.
With the support of the CLS, Gaw spent eight weeks of her summer in China engaged in a rigorous language immersion program. Her goal was to not only to strengthen her personal understanding of China, its culture and language, but to also bring back this knowledge to raise awareness and appreciation of the Chinese language and culture with her peers.
Gaw, originally from Cupertino, Calif., graduated from Monta Vista High School in 2011. After completing medical school and her residency, she hopes to practice as a physician for Doctors Without Borders.
